Yin Yoga

Traditional yoga was more yin-like hundreds of years ago than it is now. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika was the first book to introduce 15 yoga poses and they are all seated or supine - basically yin poses. People worked hard physically each day and needed a chance to find a firm seat for stillness and quiet. (Shtira, Sukha Asanam) As modern day lives became more sedentary, yoga became more active, so even though there are quiet poses for reflection in traditional “yang” yoga classes, it became apparent that something else was needed for balance.
